"I think the question of whether fashion is art isn’t really right, as it presupposes that art is better or more respectable than fashion. And I don’t think that is necessarily the case. To apply a feminist analysis, the very fact that fashion and most other “crafts” have not been considered “arts” goes back to the fact that these areas have been traditionally been the domain of women. Hand embroidery, lace-making, millinery, things like that – that can’t be art, art is something on canvas! Stretched canvas, not textiles! But I don’t think it matters. Fashion doesn’t need to be an “art” for people to deem it worthy enough, and for it to be compelling enough, for us to want to take notice."
